Spontaneous Ecstasy: The Truth That Tightens My Throat

When the Winds Chose Me

The Ancient Greeks watched the spin of the bronze weather vane to understand the head winds. Civilizations since have made meaning from that directional guide swirling in the storms. And now I am coming to understand how my own weather vane has shown up across the stages of my life – the way my heart, mind, body and spirit have survived every challenge, keeping me grounded and true.

I recently explored my shifting perspective around my level of emotion and how it organically comes upon me like a shocking slap in the face of a frigid sea gust. I say organically today but over the years others have scolded and mocked my “overly dramatic” and “too emotional” frequent tears. I have been swept by emotion more times than I could name. Back then, I didn’t have language for any of it. And if you’re…

Raised in Chaos, Finding My Way Back to Myself

My Personal Jesus (and Other Early Clues)

I grew up the picture of a firstborn, white, middle‑class daughter of a Cleveland Lutheran and a Southern Baptist belle from Arkansas—two people who started a family in Southern California in the 70s and carried their generational trauma well into the 80s (and really still going strong today!). Translation: I loved New Wave and Rock‑n‑Roll, and I questioned everything.

To their credit, my parents tried out nearly every Christian denomination in our community, hoping one might feel like home. I could write a separate editorial about why none of those churches stuck for my parents, but this story is about my personal Jesus—yes, the Depeche Mode reference is intentional. My parents never forced church on us but probably took us only because they thought they were supposed to. Maybe because of their own religious trauma, they gave us space to choose our own…

A space for people who found their way to a spiritual life that fits — permission to decide your own path. For seekers, question‑askers, late bloomers, and anyone defining a Higher Power on their own terms. Bring curiosity and respect. Leave judgment and soapboxes at the door.

I Built myself a Mortgage News Bot

I got tired of reading 47 mortgage news articles every morning. So I taught an AI Bot to do it for me. 🤖

Here's what happens now:

6:00 AM: My phone buzzes. New email.

6:01 AM: I hit play on a 5-10minute audio briefing.

6:10 AM: I'm fully caught up on:

•Current mortgage rates

I’m small in this enormous world, and maybe that’s why I marvel. Every day something tugs at my curiosity — a shimmer in the sky, a strange plant, a human moment that feels bigger than it looks — and I can’t help digging deeper. It’s how I go from “enthusiastic mom who gets excited easily” to a lifelong learner who genuinely believes in the magic of the universe. I’m just a speck on this big rock, but I’m delighted to be part of it all.

The Babies Weathered the Storm!

Excuse me while I wax sentimental over the miracle of life and dab my tears.

This winter, right outside my bedroom window, we discovered two jelly-bean-sized eggs tucked into a hummingbird nest in our backyard. Allen’s hummingbirds, to be exact — fierce, territorial little dive-bombers with iridescent flashes of green and orange who apparently decided that this yard, this tree, this narrow strip between the house and the grass, was the right place to bring life into the world.

But the nest held.

The Bamboo I Misjudged

It was built into a plant I’ve spent two years resenting: a Heavenly Bamboo shrub that grows too fast, too full, always forcing me to duck as I walk by. I’ve cursed that plant. Now embarrassed, I remember asking Husband several times to remove it. And yet — there it was, doing exactly what it was made to do. While pines snap and eucalyptus shed…
